Who was Maitreyi?
Maitreyi was a revered female scholar, philosopher, and Brahmavadini (a woman who discloses/expounds the Vedas) from ancient India's Vedic period.
* Intellectual Legacy: She was the wife of the great sage Yajnavalkya and contributed to the composition of hymns in the Rigveda.
* The Famous Dialogue: In the Brihadaranyaka Upanishad, when Sage Yajnavalkya decided to renounce worldly life and divide his assets between his two wives, Maitreyi famously declined the material wealth.
* Her Timeless Question: She asked, "Yenaham namrita syam kimaham tena kuryam?" ("What should I do with that wealth which will not grant me immortality/supreme knowledge?"). She chose spiritual wisdom over material possessions, making her a enduring symbol of female intellect, character, and self-realization.
